With Violet starting previews next week, Geek Girl Authority shared how excited they are to see our first show of our 20th season…
“The Chance Theater’s production of Parade last year was one of the best theater experiences of my life. I love the Chance Theater anyway, but Kari Hayter‘s production of a musical about a Jewish man being wrongfully convicted of sexually assaulting a child was a dismal subject that was transcendent in Hayter’s hands. As soon as I saw that she was the one directing Violet, the next show on Chance’s calendar, I was all in.
The Chance says of Violet: ‘The best Tony-nominated musical nobody’s ever heard of… Violet has wowed critics and audiences with its powerful story and energetic gospel, rock, country and R&B score by Jeanine Tesori (Fun Home and Caroline, or Change). Set in the Deep South during the early days of the civil rights movement, this powerful musical tells the touching story of a young woman accidentally scarred on the face as a child. Hoping that a TV evangelist can cure her, Violet embarks on a long bus ride from her sleepy North Carolina town through Memphis to Oklahoma. Along the way, she meets two young soldiers who teach her about love, courage and the true meaning of beauty.’
Violet made a splash on Broadway in 2014, and was nominated for Tony Awards for Best Revival of a Musical, Best Actress in a Musical (Sutton Foster), Best Featured Actor in a Musical (Joshua Henry) and Best Direction of a Musical (Leigh Silverman). Since I loved Joshua Henry’s performance as Aaron Burr in Hamilton so much, I tracked down a video of him performing one of the songs from Violet, “Let it Sing,” which you can watch [by clicking here].
The cast for Violet includes Monika Peña, Johnny Fletcher, Chris Kerrigan, Devin Collins, Brian Weigel, Jordan Schneider, Taylor Fagins, Rebeka Hoblik, Wyn Moreno, Janet McGregor, Natasha Reese, and Jade Taylor.
Violet begins previews at the Chance Theater in Anaheim, CA, on February 2, and the play runs from February 10 – March 4, 2018. Learn more and grab tickets at www.ChanceTheater.com.”
