Meet Claire Livingston (Asst Costume Designer)
This play takes place in multiple historical eras. If you could choose a specific time in history to be born, when would you choose?
From a purely costume/wardrobe standpoint, I would loved to have been born around 1895. Then I would have been at the perfect age to enjoy the exquisite style of women in the early 20th century. From the clothing and accessories to the fine art and music, that era always sparks my interest and fantasy.
Should Christians or non-Christians come see this play?
Both! This play is a wonderful example of how religious belief is sometimes best suited for personal examination and interpretation. A viewer does not need to be Christian to understand a character’s confusion about their identity or relate to unjust situations. This play is more about understanding one’s personal relationship with the world around him.
This play explores how you are perceived based on your looks versus who you really are. Can you personally relate to this theme?
Yes. I have always been very tall, so much so that, when growing up, it was always assumed that I must be amazing at basketball. On the contrary, I was horrible at basketball, much to everyone’s disappointment. Good thing I eventually became a decent volleyball player, otherwise I would have been “wasting” my height according to some.
If you met any of these characters on the street, who would you share a pint with and who would make you turn and walk away? Why?
I would want to stop and chat with Violet from Part 3; I think she is the wisest of all the characters, even though we really only get quick glimpses into her mind. I would definitely walk away from the German Soldier in Part Two. What a chauvinistic, selfish character.
Do you have a favorite moment in the play?
Not a particular moment exactly, but I love how the viewer’s impression of Violet gradually changes from seeing her as the other characters see their village idiot, to recognizing her true clarity and understanding of the situations presented.
What excites you about this story and why should people come see it?
The wonderful combination of simplicity and complexity in the action and characters is wonderfully inspiring. This is a play that every viewer is going to walk away from with a slightly different perspective on at least one aspect of their lives.
