‘Sweeney Todd’ is a Close Shave at the Chance Theater – Review

Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street Cuts it Close at the Chance Theater in Anaheim, CA.

Set against the gritty backdrop of Victorian London, Sweeney Todd spins the tale of a vengeful barber who returns to wreak havoc on those who wronged him. Winston Peacock commands the stage with intensity as Sweeney Todd, delivering a performance that is both chilling and deeply resonant. The Chance’s own Associate Artistic Director, Jocelyn Brown shines as Mrs. Lovett, bringing humor and complexity to her portrayal, while Naya Ramsey-Clarke enchants as Johanna Barker with her graceful presence.

“I’m thrilled to help tell a tale that feels as timely as ever. As the wealth gap continues to grow year after year, as homelessness and the mental health crisis continue to be mostly ignored, and as charismatic figures appear obsessed with revenge, this cautionary story seems all the more relevant,” expressed Director, James Michael McHale in his excitement regarding the production of ‘Sweeney Todd’.

The decision to streamline the cast to just 9 actors proves ingenious, highlighting the versatility and skill of each performer. Despite the smaller ensemble, the production successfully navigates Sondheim’s intricate score and complex narrative, creating moments of both grandeur and intimacy. Director James Michael McHale’s vision is palpable in every aspect of the show, supported by Fred Kinney and Mio Okada’s evocative scenic design and Jacqueline Malenke’s atmospheric lighting.

Lex Leigh’s musical direction and Mo Goodfellow’s choreography elevate the performance to new heights, complementing the cast’s unwavering commitment and passion. The production’s relevance is further underscored by McHale’s insightful direction, drawing parallels between the story’s themes of justice and contemporary societal issues.

Sweeney Todd, the Demon Barber of Fleet Street at Chance Theater runs from July 12 to August 11, 2024, at the Bette Aitken Theater Arts Center on the Cripe Stage.
