Meet Marshall Pailet (Bookwriter/Composer/Director)
Why do you think the world has been so fascinated with the legend of Nessie?
I think it’s an obsession with the unknown. Loch Ness is one of the deepest lakes in Scotland, and the water is pitch black due to runoff from the surrounding shore, so it’s really hard to know what’s down there, even with advanced technology. The unknown both terrifies and captivates us, which is why I think we’re all scared of/obsessed with stories about monsters, aliens, ghosts and such.
What is it like to work on a world premiere musical?
It’s awesome. It’s what I live for. I love being part of a group of people creating something that’s never been seen before. We’re like frontier settlers…but with jazz hands.
Do you have a favorite moment in the play?
The first time we meet Nessie. It’s pretty cool…
How do you prepare to work on a project like this?
It takes years of preparation on our end. It’s all consuming. And during a world premiere process, there are so many things we could potentially change during the rehearsal process: dialogue, lyrics, music, orchestrations, puppets, characters. It’s craziness. It’s awesome.
What excites you about this story and why should people come see it?
It’s a very personal story about a young girl coming to terms with a very personal event. But it exists within a spectacle. The production is gonna be so big and beautiful, yet it’s filled with so much heart. I think audiences are gonna love it.
Tell us something most people don’t know about you.
I live in New York, and my second favorite reason to visit Anaheim Hills (next to working at the Chance) is jumping on the trampolines at SkyZone. I love SkyZone. You should come hang out with me at SkyZone.
