Meet David Golbeck (Morty)David_Golbeck

Tell us something about your family that has shaped who you are as a person.
My parents always spoke of the sanctity and value of every human life. It has always been a guiding light for me.

What social issue(s) are you passionate about?
The causes and effects of being homeless and how being homeless can remove simple human dignity from the equation. This includes many things we may take as everyday – hygiene, the value of employment, and one’s contribution to society.

What was on your mind on the verge of the new millennium in 1999?
The Y2K scare, and because of that, our reliance on systems which can be compromised or shut down.

Tell us about one of your family heroes.
My step-father was an 8th Air Force Scout flying a P-51 in advance of B-17 bombing missions for the sole purpose of drawing enemy ground fire and reporting back on the gun positions.

If you met any of the characters on the street, who would you share a pint with and who would make you turn and walk away? And why? Run from Ben – I’m not comfortable around closed-minded people. Drink with Vera – she’s seen a LOT.

Do you have a favorite moment in the play?
Family dynamics always interest me. The sibling relationships and interplay is of great interest.

What do you connect to in this story?
The ethics involved. Having your world rocked when you learn that something you have always believed turns out not to be what you thought it was.

What was your first job in theater?
Hanging lights in the old South Coast Repertory theater on Newport Boulevard in the 70’s.

What excites you about this story and why should people come see it?
This is a revisiting/revealing of issues and an era that many people may have either never heard of, or have forgotten about, and the effect these types of things can have on individuals and their families.
