Theater Classes for Adults
Intermediate and seasoned performers will explore the foundation of why we are called Actors: ACTION. While emotional life is often seen as the key to a performance, this class emphasizes how action drives every scene. By following the path of action, all other elements (including emotional life) will resonate more deeply with your audience. Through classroom exercises and scene study, students will build a stronger foundation to grow with every role.

“Start with Action, Always”
Taught by Amanda Zarr
Return to the basics. Stanislavski’s second principle is Action, and it is from this foundation that everything else begins to build. Remember the importance of tactics and how they must include variety—this comes from a creative actor. This class is ideal for working actors who want to break through to the next level in their craft and achieve greater goals. Classwork will include scene study and numerous tactic exercises.

“Outside, In”
Taught by Amanda Zarr
In this section of the course, you will rediscover the importance of allowing all action to originate outside of yourself. You’ll learn how your scene partners are a source of endless inspiration and how to uncover this wealth anew each time a scene is performed. Building on the work of Stanislavski, this class also incorporates principles from Meisner and Uta Hagen. Action is all around you within a scene, and its dynamic discovery is what captivates an audience. Students will learn through targeted exercises and scene work.

“What is the script NOT telling us about action”
Taught by Amanda Zarr
This class examines how text analysis, in partnership with your scene partner and the screenwriter or playwright, reveals action at its core. Often, it is by identifying what is missing in the text that action emerges. Action is like the mortar between bricks—when used to build your performance, it makes you more directable. Actors will revisit the foundations of action, understand its importance, and integrate it into a fully realized performance. Too often, actors play only what is written on the page, inventing motivations they find interesting instead of focusing on the action needed to tell the story. In this class, students will collaboratively work on a single script, culminating in a group performance.

“Action Gym”
Taught by Amanda Zarr
During this session, all classes will involve exercises—either solo or with a partner—focused on discovering action, performing action, and responding to direction. Actors will be challenged to work quickly, make smart choices, and transition seamlessly to the next task. This class emphasizes adaptability and the ability to let go of preplanned actions, fostering deeper exploration. Through a variety of exercises and small scene work, students will engage with the idea that “ideas are free; you must be willing to let them go because they cost nothing.”
