“Navy veteran and Westminster resident Donald Pageler shared his experience serving aboard the USS Liberty.

The ship was attacked by Israeli forces in 1967 during the Six Day War. The combined air and sea attack killed 34 crewmembers and wounded 171.

When the ship was brought to the Mediterranean island of Malta, Pageler said he found the blown-off arm of a friend during a cleanup of the ship.

‘He had been a bodybuilder and I could tell by the muscle structure whose arm it was,’ he said.

Because his job as a cryptologic technician — supporting intelligence gathering efforts – required one of the highest security clearances in the military, Pageler said he was barred from speaking of the incident, but chose to anyway.”
