Tribes

By Nina Raine
Directed by Marya Mazor

Awards and Recognition

  • Orange County Premiere
  • WINNER! Outstanding Play Drama Desk Award
  • WINNER! NY Drama Critics Circle Award
  • NOMINATED Broadway World Regional Award

Billy is a deaf young man who was raised inside the politically incorrect cocoon of his hearing parents’ house and has learned to communicate by reading lips — but it’s not until Billy meets Sylvia, a young woman fluent in sign language and on the brink of deafness herself, that he finally gets what it feels like to be really understood. The Deaf community becomes his new “tribe,” which sparks both funny and fierce tensions at home. Winner of the 2012 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Play, Nina Raine’s play explores family dynamics, self-exploration, and what it means to be truly heard.

    2. My husband and I are so impressed with the quality of the acting in the two productions that we have been privileged to attend. (“Parade” was the other one.) We have been season ticket holders at both the Geffen and the Douglas theaters. We think that your productions are even better than these larger and better-known theaters. We intend to purchase the 2018 series. Thank you for such wonderful theater-going experiences!
