Artist Profile

Martha Carter is a lighting designer based out of Los Angeles, California. She is currently attending the University of California at Irvine working towards her MFA in Lighting Design. Martha enjoys working in a wide array of theatrical entertainment including theme parks, live events, dance, theatre and art installations. She has designed and assisted in many theatres on the east and west coast. Some of these venues and shows include Romeo and Juliet at Great River Shakespeare Festival, The Why at The Blank Theater, Pygmalion at Long Beach Playhouse, and Marry me a Little at Theater Out. Martha has a long-standing relationship with Chance theater in which she has designed several of their mainstage and second stage productions. These shows include After the Revolution, In The Heights, The Legend(s) of Sleepy Hollow and now A Chorus Line and Boy at the Edge of Everything. She has also assisted designers at Busch Gardens with their summer park wide production of Illuminights in Williamsburg, as well as at The Hollywood Bowl. Martha is an active member, and the lighting designer, for Re:BorN Dance Interactive, a company that is a contemporary dance company based in California which strives to go beyond the aesthetics of contemporary modern dance. She works with a number of choreographers as their lighting designer and participates with them throughout their creative process. Martha enjoys collaborating and working with ensemble companies to create new work that addresses the current political and social issues of today to insight positive change within communities.
