Meet Jonathan Daroca (Lighting Designer) Jonathan-Daroca

What’s your favorite way to communicate your feelings to a loved one?
Over a good bottle of wine.

Have you ever had a work-related romance? If so… how’d it go?
Yes…It was great, and then it was brief.

Jonathan is a highly regarded lighting and scenic designer for the theatre. He enjoys creating designs that address what is important to each client, while bringing his personal experience to create beautiful, polished work. He is recognized as a strong addition to any artistic team whose flexibility and friendly attitude make him a relief to work with.

Tell us about something that happened on a blind/first date.
One time on a first date, I coincidentally ended up at dinner at the same café as my date’s family.

If you met any of the characters on the street, who would you share a pint with and who would make you turn and walk away? And why?
I would share a pint with Maraczek. He seems like someone I would connect with. I like his style. Plus, he would probably buy the drinks. I would turn and walk away from Arpad. I once got run over by a bicyclist so I usually avoid them on the street.

How do you prepare to work on a project like this?
First, I dive into the music. It’s the best way for me to understand the tone and world of the show. I keep this going on while researching the show, trying to understand what the time and place of the characters would have been like in real life.

What was your first job in theater?
My first job was watching a prop table backstage in a drama camp in 7th grade. It was so fun that I kept getting more involved in shows.
