jruckman Meet Jennifer Ruckman (Katha)

What modern amenity would be the hardest for you to give up?
My phone.  It’s such a cliché, but I use it for everything! I’m constantly multi-tasking and I do it almost entirely through my phone – pretty much everything important is saved to or accessed on that magic little box.

If you had a time machine, which time period would you like to live in?
The 1980’s.  I would gladly take the shoulder pads and big hair to get the music, movies and energy of the decade.

If you were to start a role playing community, what would it be? And, who would you be in it?
A Medieval Society.  But it’s tough because I think I’d give up total authenticity in favor of bathing.  I would be in the royal family, of course!

Tell us something most people don’t know about you.
I talk and even occasionally walk in my sleep.  I’m told I say things ranging from random outbursts to full on conversations and it happens most nights.  The sleepwalking is more rare, but I have woken up standing in other rooms or rearranging things in the bedroom.  It’s a little disconcerting … for me and people I live with!

Do you have a favorite moment in the play?
I’m sure that will change a dozen times before we’re done, but right now my favorite moment is when we see the real Ellen.  All the perfect walls come down, and it’s very powerful.

What do you connect to in this story?
One of the first things that drew me to this story is the struggle to feel fulfilled, to find happiness even if you’re not sure what that looks like.  I think it’s easy to see the appeal of a sort of etch-a-sketch approach when you’re feeling lost or unhappy in your life.  Maybe it would be easier to just wipe the slate clean and change everything, maybe that’s the most effective way to build a life that fits you.  I think most of us have felt that way at some point.

How do you prepare to work on a project like this?
Research!  I think that’s always where I start, but especially for a play like this – the year 1955 is a whole other character in this show with charm, flaws and complexity.  Every detail helps build this world for us and for the audience.

What excites you about this story and why should people come see it?
This story is a unique twist on a very relatable struggle.  There are truly touching moments and a lot of humor.  It’s definitely not like anything you’ve seen before!
